Gila Valley Temple Open House

My husband is a direct descendant of Christopher Layton. Christopher Layton was asked to many things by President Brigham Young. One of these things was to move to Arizona and settle the Gila Valley. The people of this area have been promised a temple for some time. The dedication of this temple is this Sunday. We made the three hour drive to take the kids through the open house and teach them a little about their heritage. The drive went very well. (Side note: Don't watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on a car trip. We finished off a large bag of Peanut M&Ms while watching this movie.) The kids were impacted by the temple. We asked them what was their favorite part. Abigail said she liked the room with all of the mirrors. Craig said he liked the pool where people get baptized. Laney, I think, said she liked the twinkling chandeliers. My favorite part was the feeling that came over me as we waited to go in. I want so badly to have my kids with me in the temple someday. I know I need to do the small things now to make that happen. After visiting the temple, we drive past Eastern Arizona University. My husband's great-grandfather was once the President of what later became this school. We also drove past President Kimball's childhood home which is just across the street from the campus. Close to the campus is also the cemetery where my husband's grandmother and her parents are buried. We stopped to pay our respects. Since we had done some family history research, we recognized the other names in the family plot and took pictures of all of the head stones to add to our family files. It was a worth while opportunity and a great family memory.

My Grandma Hunt was born and raised in Pima/Thatcher and my family has ties back to the settling also. Just last night my Dad and I were talking about how excited she and her family must be seeing this finally happen.
